A lawsuit was filed by an 18-wheeler accident attorney and the widow of a man who died as the result of a semi truck running a red light and striking a passenger vehicle head on. The lawsuit was filed in San Francisco over a 2011 incident. The truck allegedly ran a red light and veered into oncoming traffic to avoid a car that was in the intersection legally. As it did, it struck the victim’s Chevy Blazer head on, tipped over and killed the victim instantly.
This is only one example of how deadly semi trucks can be. While many of the claims filed against trucking companies are for property and personal injury, many of them are also, sadly, lawsuits filed over wrongful deaths.
Understanding the Danger
When a semi truck veers into the path of a passenger vehicle, the passenger vehicle really has no chance whatsoever. The passenger vehicle is so outmatched in terms of size, mass and momentum that there is no way that the occupant is likely to escape without injury. This is why it’s so important to keep an eye on semi trucks, even when you’re on slow city streets and did wouldn’t seem like there is a lot of danger to worry about. At slow speeds, they’re still deadly vehicles in collisions.
Avoiding the Danger
Always give semi trucks extra room. If you’re in a situation where it seems like you might collide with them, get out of the way however you can without hurting yourself further. Semi truck drivers are usually very good at what they do. While there are a lot of lawsuits filed against negligent drivers, you do have to take into account that there are semi trucks all over the highways and freeways and that, most of the time, they don’t end up hurting anyone. When a driver is negligent, however, that semi truck that they drive becomes the deadliest thing on the road and you want to stay well clear of any bad situations that you see unfolding.
If you have been injured or lost a loved one due to an accident involving a negligent semi driver, contact an 18-wheeler accident attorney. They can take a look at the situation and see if you have cause to sue the trucking company, the driver or another party that somehow brought you or a loved one to harm. It’s better to act quickly on these matters.
