Donald Medley Killed, 3 Injured While Helping Fellow Motorist

Garza County, Texas — One man was killed and three others were injured in a Tuesday morning (02/04/2014) truck accident which occurred as the 4 men were attempting to assist the driver of a box truck which had skidded off the icy highway.

According to reports, Garza County sheriff’s deputies were investigating a jackknifed 18-wheeler on U.S. 84 (about four miles north of Post, TX) when they saw a box truck lose control and skid into the center median. The four men had walked over to the truck to assist the driver when an 18-wheeler came upon the scene, hit the brakes, and skidded into the 4 men.

46-year-old Donald Medley, of Snyder, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. 44-year-old Cecilio Gonzales, of Fort Worth, and 34-year-old Kevin Trauger, of Lubbock, are both listed in critical condition at University Medical Center in Lubbock. 52-year-old Garza County Chief Deputy Charlie Evans was listed in stable condition at the same hospital. The driver of the box truck was also transported to the hospital, but his condition is unknown.

Officials are conducting an investigation into the accident, but the results may not be ready for some time. The 18-wheeler driver may face charges, said DPS Sgt. Bryan Witt, but that decision has not been made at this time.
